So where did the name 1905 come from?
When we were thinking of a name for the company, we wanted something cool but unique. So we looked at the history of the popsicle, and the name was born.
Here is the story of how an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson accidentally invented the popsicle.
In 1905, Epperson mixed a powdered soda drink with water and left the mixture outside overnight with a stirring stick in it. The temperature dropped significantly that night, causing the mixture to freeze with the stirring stick still in it. The next morning, Epperson discovered the frozen drink and pulled out the stick, revealing a delicious frozen treat. He called it the “Epsicle.”
Years later, in 1923, Epperson recreated the accidental invention for his own children. He took the idea to a local amusement park in California and started selling the frozen treats, which were an instant hit. He later changed the name to “Popsicle,” a combination of “pop” (a slang term for soda) and “icicle.”
Epperson’s creation became very popular, and he eventually patented the idea in 1924. In 1925, he sold the rights to the Popsicle to the Joe Lowe Company, which took over the manufacturing and marketing of the product.
Since then, the Popsicle has evolved into a beloved summer treat, available in a variety of flavors and shapes. It’s not only a refreshing treat but also a symbol of nostalgia and childhood memories for many people.
